Nick Selenitsch’s art practice promotes the artistic and social importance of play in the formation of understanding. Through a variety of media – installation, drawing, sculpture, and public artworks – his works create an elemental language out of familiar forms. To achieve this, Selenitsch playfully suspends symbolic and linguistic systems (such as words and phrases, the aesthetics of games, and motifs from civic markings) from their common function, forging an abstract-aligned expression of defiant indeterminacy and paradox.

Nick Selenitsch (b. 1979) lives and works in Naarm/Melbourne. He completed his PhD in Fine Art at Monash University, Melbourne in 2023, and he has been a Lecturer in Art at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, since 2017. Selenitsch was a Studio Resident at Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne, between 2006–2008, while additionally receiving the Qantas Travelling Art Prize in 2009 and the Australia Council studio residency in Helsinki, Finland in 2010. 

Selenitsch’s work has regularly been exhibited and collected by prominent museums and institutions across Australia for over two decades. He has held notable solo exhibitions at the Shepparton Art Museum, Shepparton; Latrobe Regional Gallery, Latrobe; Incinerator Gallery, Melbourne; Benalla Art Gallery, Benalla; and Westspace, Melbourne. He has been featured in acclaimed curated group exhibitions and biennials including  TarraWarra Biennial 2016: Endless Circulation at the TarraWarra Museum of Art, Healesville, 2016; Melbourne Now at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, 2013; Collage: The Heide Collection at the Heide Museum of Modern Art, Melbourne, 2013; New Psychedelia at the University of Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane, 2011; and 21st Century Modern – 2006 Adelaide Biennial of Australia at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, 2006.
