Jane Trengove works across a range of visual art media including painting, installation and collaboration. Trengove’s practice has articulated the relevance of contemporary art in wider social political debates and power relationships, such as gender, sexuality, race, and disability. Trengove engages ideas of perception and the primacy of sight, with an interest in the way cultural meanings are affected by the way we ‘see’, and how representation can be used to interrogate these meanings. Since 2005, Trengove has developed the Painting Element series, an ongoing project where she reviews the relevance of painting traditions in contemporary visual culture. Whilst working with fundamental techniques or elements, Trengove observes the imprecise relationship between the real and the abstract, and the enduring dialogue between painting and photography. Trengove can no longer physically create paintings, however, her engagement with the form has not diminished, continuing her interest in these discourses, she applies and utilises other methods to ‘paint’. Throughout her career, Trengove has worked closely with the arts industry, community organisations and government to increase the participation of Deaf and disabled people in the cultural life of Victoria.
