Curated by Georgia Boe, a series of twelve new charcoal works on paper by Mia Boe feature in the group exhibition Residue at Firstdraft in Sydney. Showing alongside artists d harding and Sha Sawari, the exhibition brings together the practices of three artists at different stages of their careers, working in diverse ways with charcoal.
“What links these practices is their refusal of charcoal as mere tool. Each artist recognizes it
as index—of fire, of pressure, of survival and ghosts, of systems both creative and carceral. Charcoal holds within it the memory of what it was before transformation. The drum remains, material proof that transformation requires labour, requires fire, requires the artist’s hands turning wood into the very substance that will speak back against erasure.” – Georgia Boe, Residue (exhibition text), 2025.
