Paintings and ceramics by Gordon Bennett are included in the major Margaret Preston retrospective exhibition currently on view at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia.
Curated by Dr. Beckett Rozentals and Michael Gentle, the exhibition illustrates the legacy of the Modernist artist’s career, punctuating the show with artworks by contemporary artists who navigated, engaged with, and responded directly to the impact and rhetoric that characterises Preston’s contribution to Australian Art.
Including works from Bennett’s ‘Home Décor’ series, the exhibition restages Bennett’s presentation at the influential quinquennial exhibition Documenta 13 in Kassel, Germany, 2012. In the exhibition, and now on show at the NGV, five-large scale paintings from the artist’s Home décor (After M Preston) series (2009-2013) were displayed alongside the diminutive, stylised references they critique: Preston’s ‘translations’ of shield patterns which emerged out of her writing in arts periodicals in the mid-late 1920s.
