Gian Manik in Dreaming from afar at Gus Fisher Gallery, University of Auckland, Tāmaki Makaurau

Gian Manik will present a suite of new paintings alongside two site-specific wall-based works for the exhibition Dreaming from afar at the University of Auckland’s Gus Fisher Gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand. Alongside Manik, the exhibition brings together work by Brunelle Dias Primbs (India, Aotearoa New Zealand) and Tyrone Te Waa (Ngātu Tūwharetoa) to explore the ways in which different artists prove what it means to encounter a place of tradition or history through their own contemporaneity.

Touching on ideas of Orientalism, queerness, religion and whakapapa, Dreaming from afar considers the complexities of history and nostalgia through a painterly environment that blends the physical with the imaginary.

The exhibition is pressented in association with Te Ahurei Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Arts Festival 2026.
