Transpires

, 2022
Installation view, Sutton Gallery

The paintings in Transpires explore notions of absence, presence, time, and memory. In addressing these phenomena, Colquhoun has created two distinct bodies of work, Impending, and Telescope, each containing expansive views with intervening forms.

The verdant landscapes of the Impending series are significant to the artist through experience and memory. In a number of these paintings, wires cross the surface anticipating or capturing a moment. The orbs that hover above the garden scenes and the constellations in the Telescope paintings allude to shifting perspectives. Whether a wire, thread or lens, Colquhoun employs these painterly devices throughout Transpires to unsettle his otherwise serene outlooks.
