Sutton Gallery is pleased to present Tilt, an exhibition of new photographic works by Simon Terrill that double and collapse time, space and perspective of urban environments.

Simon Terrill’s photographic practice focuses upon representations of people in public sites as a way to explore the contrasting and oscillating space between the personal and the private, the individual and the collective, and the impact of these fluid definitions on architecture, portraiture and the photograph.

Tilt consists of a series of photographs that present unstable views of landscapes and urban encounters. Through the layering of exposures into a single negative, time spans and chance occurrences are compressed into a single image so that everyday scenes—including a village carnival, the Gardens of Versailles, a crowd outside London’s central bank and an industrial zone—shuffle and morph through a doubling of vision and bodies dissolve into their surrounds.

Accompanying Tilt is a photographic series titled Thirty-Six Views of Orbit. Alluding to the 18th century Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai’s famous woodblock prints of Mount Fuji, the subject of this work is the spiraling red giant of the ArcelorMittal Orbit observation tower built for the London Olympic Park in 2012. This mad structure infects its surrounds with a strange presence akin to a mutant DNA spiral rising from the toxic ground of these former wastelands; a last recalcitrant gasp from the areas’ rich industrial past. Circled from the ground and also viewed from a variety of places and distances, Thirty-Six Views depicts the tower as it peers between trees, waves its head above chimneys, over freeways and intrudes into the ordinary events playing out below.
