Sutton Gallery is pleased to present DREAMcreamcreakcrackcrockCLOCK, a two-person exhibition by artists Matlok Griffiths and Dan Moynihan. The title was formed through a sequential adjustment of letters, each transformation shifting meaning until the word Dream progresses into Clock. That form of linguistic play provided the conceptual framework for this artistic exchange.

Working between separate studios, Griffiths and Moynihan established a constraint-based exchange, in which word prompts were translated from one another into colours, filtering language through their individual sensibilities and informing the colour palette for each artwork. This process foregrounds a friction between communication and miscommunication, revealing how subjective experience and material intuition influences one’s understanding of colour. The resulting works present each artist’s distinct approach to surface, form and texture, intrinsic in the acts of seeing, interpreting and making.

DREAMcreamcreakcrackcrockCLOCK becomes both an experiment in correspondence and a meditation on the interplay and slippages between language, observations, and the painted surface. The result is a harmonious clash of perceptions presented on each artist’s unique support for painting.

Artist Biographies

Matlok Griffiths

Matlok Griffiths (b. 1983) works across painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. His often diaristic practice employs wide-ranging materials including bronze, ceramics, paper and casual ephemera. Griffiths’s work has been shown in numerous group and individual exhibitions with recent solo shows at Darren Knight Gallery, Sydney, and ReadingRoom, Melbourne. His work is the subject of three publications: Mumbles & Clunks (co-published by Darren Knight Gallery and ReadingRoom, 2019), Buffoon Seeks Pleasure (Darren Knight Gallery, 2016) and Comfort Room Forms (PubPublishing, 2015). In 2017 he undertook a four-month visit to the United States for a mentorship with the American artist Stanley Whitney, funded by the Australia Council for the Arts. He holds a Bachelor of Visual Communications from Curtin University (2004). Griffiths’s work is held in private and public collections in Australia and internationally.

Dan Moynihan

A tactile practitioner with an engrained appreciation for common materials. Nothing is off the table, sculpture, installation, you name it. Conceptualised and executed to draw in the audience, the experience a considered and integral component of the work. Constructing instinctive reflections of reality, with obsessively detailed parallel worlds of wry undertone and subtle theatrics clearly a driving force. They laughed when he sat down at the piano, then he started playing.

Dan Moynihan is represented by Tolarno Galleries, Melbourne
