David Rosetzky has been making portraits since the early 1990s, and Composite Images is a new series of black and white, gelatin silver photographs, that continues his interest in portraiture and experimental photographic processes. For this new body of work Rosetzky has used double-exposures, an analogue photographic technique that superimposes two images together by running the same roll of film through a camera and exposing it twice, thus creating a third, combined or composite image. When making this new series of images Rosetzky was drawn to the unforeseen alignments and compositions created through a process of chance, he states, “the technique of double-exposure photography is particularly interesting to me – working with portraiture and ideas relating to the self and identity – as it helps me to create images that seem ambiguous, fragmented and in a state of transition, rather than fixed or essential.”

David Rosetzky has a strong international reputation, having participated in a substantial number of important international projects, including The Third ICP Triennial of Photography and Video, International Centre for Photography, New York, 2009; Viewpoints & Viewing Points: Asian Art Biennial, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, 2009; and Face Up, Hamburger Bahnhoff, Berlin, 2003. Other selected exhibitions include: 24 Frames per Second, Carriageworks, Sydney, 2015; So Long as You Move, Ark Galerie, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 2014; South by Southeast: Recent Video Art from Australia and New Zealand, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, 2011; 21st Century: Art in the First Decade, Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, 2011; 21st Century Modern: Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, Art Gallery of South Australia, 2006; Crowds/Conversations/Confessions, Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada, 2006; 2004: Australian Culture Now, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne; and Objects and Ideas: Revisiting Minimalism, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, 1997. In 2014 the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne, and Carriageworks, Sydney, co-commissioned Rosetzky to produce a new video work Gaps, which followed on from a major survey show at the Centre for Contemporary Photography in 2013 (which toured Nationally through to Oct 2015). In 2011 the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, commissioned Rosetzky to make the cinemascale video project How to Feel. Rosetzky has also presented regular solo exhibitions at Sutton Gallery since 2004.
