Sutton Gallery is pleased to present it all depends on you by Lucina Lane. The foundational material in this latest body of work, is the phased-out military-grade Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniform (DPCU) Cordura canvas, which due to its figurative nature was nicknamed ‘hearts and bunnies’ or ‘jellybean camo’. Drawn from the Paul Celan (1920–1970) poem You, the exhibition title it all depends on you, undermines the fabric’s complex visual and historical connotations of war, politics and action.

Departing from her previous use of neutral cotton duck canvas, Lane turns to the inherent meaning embedded in the DPCU textile itself. The canvas, once a neutral substrate, now actively contributes to the work’s semiotic charge, aligning materiality with message. Across the surface, white wall paint is used not simply as a tool to prime the canvas ground, but as an aesthetic layer, to obscure and highlight. In doing so, the works are optically drawn closer to the gallery wall— dissolving boundaries between artwork, environment and implicating the surrounding space in their reading.

Lane’s restricted application of flat, uniform paint furthers her ongoing engagement with the physical and attendant conceptual construction of artworks. These works draw upon and recontextualize the vocabularies of historical, artistic movements including Post-Minimalism, Pop, and Conceptual Art. The resulting works operate analogously to Rorschach tests—ambiguous and multivalent, inviting ideological projection and personal introspection. Through this ambiguity, Lane positions the viewer as an active participant, compelled to negotiate their own interpretive frameworks, subjectivities, and sociopolitical assumptions.
