Anne Ferran in ‘Australian Female Photographers’ at the Horsham Regional Art Gallery
Anne Ferran’s seminal diptych Scenes on the Death of Nature (Scene I & II), 1986, is currently featured in a group exhibition Australian Female Photographers: From the Collection. The exhibition highlights forerunning women artists who have experimented and made decisive contributions to develop and further the rich tradition of photography in Australia throughout the past century.

Anne Ferran in ‘Photography: Real and Imagined’ at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia
Anne Ferran’s photographic work ‘Scenes on the Death of Nature III’ is included in the group exhibition ‘Photography: Real and Imagined’ at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia. Showcasing more than 200 works sourced from the NGV’s extensive photography collection, the exhibition interrogates the proposition that photographs are either grounded in reality – a record, a document, a reflection of the world – or the product of imagination, storytelling and illusion.
Remarking on the acclaimed series ‘Scenes on the Death of Nature’ in 1987, Anne Ferran has said, “In their size and scale, their period connotations, their employment of classical conventions, the photographs are reminiscent of monumental sculpture which is, out of all art forms, the most public. It could be said of these photographs that the language they “speak” is so much a part of our culture that the audience already knows how to interpret them, even if it doesn’t “know” that it knows.”

‘Doing Feminism: Women’s Art and Feminist Criticism in Australia’ by Anne Marsh
Doing Feminism represents over 220 artists and groups including Catherine Bell, Kate Beynon, Vivienne Binns, Anne Ferran, Elizabeth Gower, Sara Hughes, Helen Johnson, Laresa Kosloff, Lindy Lee, Rosslynd Piggott, Nusra Latif Qureshi and Jane Trengove, with 370 colour illustrations punctuated by extracts from artists’ statements, curatorial writing and critique.
Tracking networks of art practice, exhibitions, protest and critical thought over several generations, Marsh demonstrates the innovation and power of women’s art and the ways in which it has influenced and changed the contemporary art landscape in Australia and internationally.
