Elizabeth Gower, paris project @ the project space

THE PROJECT SPACE IS OPEN FRIDAY & SATURDAY, 1pm - 5pm

The Paris Project comprise two bodies of work that record Elizabeth Gower's recent residency (awarded by the AGNSW) at the Cité International des Arts.

Cuttings (from Paris) are fabricated from printed papers found at the Cité or gleaned from the streets of the nearby Marais. These works reference wallpapers from the Musée Carnavalet and Versailles as well as memories of Parisienne hotels and suburban Australian houses. The repetitive motifs of the wallpaper designs are replicated through the precise cutting of the retrieved papers, which fragments the French text and printed images. The paper elements are then collaged onto sheets of semi-transparent drafting film.

The Marais series are a collection of cut paper 'souvenirs' that record the ubiquitous black wrought iron balustrades of central Paris. The design variations are precisely cut from pages of French fashion magazines, advertising and tourist brochures sourced from the Marais area.
