Elizabeth Gower, Delineations

The complex geometries of Elizabeth Gower's new works, Delineations, are constructed entirely from precisely cut strips of printed papers derived from visual merchandising. These papers reference contemporary material culture and effectively re-arrange traces of one visual language - commerce and advertising, into another language - repetition and contemplation.

For Delineations, Gower draws from her extensive photographic archive of prototype designs from Moorish encaustic tiles, Art Nouveau wallpaper, Chinese lattice work screens, Victorian inlaid tiles, Italian terrazzo, Art Deco, Bauhaus and Modernist design, which she has modified into delicate collages of intricate linear interpretations. Cultural histories are usually recorded through figurative imagery in the visual arts, however there is a concurrent abstract language of geometric systems and repetitive codes that also trace cultural identities and socio/political developments. Delineations is the first exhibition in an ongoing series that collectively will form an extensive inventory of the language of ‘pattern' and abstraction.

Gower has held over 30 individual exhibitions throughout Australia and overseas, including shows at AC Institute, New York, USA, Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, Longwood University, Virginia and Arthouse, London.
