Catherine Bell's work is multi-disciplinary ranging from drawing, sculptural installation, and performance documented on video and displayed on monitors or as photographic stills. Her practice centres on autobiographical experience and her research explores the ways in which subjectivity, reflexivity, liminality, ritualistic performance process and artistic product coincide.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Art History & English Literature) from the University of Queensland in 1989 and completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Sculpture) at Queensland University of Technology in 1992. After graduating from Q.U.T., Bell was awarded the Melville Haysom scholarship and residency at the Queensland Art Gallery (1994). That year Bell had her first solo exhibition at Sutton Gallery and has since been included in group exhibitions such as Perspecta at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1993; Small Monuments at the Queensland Art Gallery in 1995; The Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1996 and Truth Universally Acknowledged at the Australian Centre of Contemporary Art in 2005. In 1996 Bell completed an MFA at RMIT and spent 6 months at 200 Gertrude Street's residential studio before moving to the United Kingdom to embark on a research fellowship at the Ruskin School of Fine Art, Oxford University in 2000-01. In 2003 Bell was awarded an Australian Postgraduate Scholarship to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Art and Design at Monash University, Caulfield, where she is a sessional lecturer in both the Fine Art and Art Theory Department.
